So you have just had some composite bonding and want to ensure they continue to look great. Here are some top tips to on looking after your composites:
1. Do not use a whitening toothpaste on a regular basis
Whitening toothpaste often contain abrasive particles which can damage the surface of composite and make them look dull as it removes the shiny front surface. Using a hard toothbrush on a regular basis can make the situation worse as it can significantly wear the composite down.
2. Drink through a straw and keep coloured foods to a minimum
Although composite is not a porous material you will get less surface discolouration and stains if you use a straw and avoid foods with artificial colours. If you find you are consistently getting surface staining you may need to visit your dentist for further polishing and to ensure the surface is free of any voids where food etc.. may be collecting.
3. Wear a soft mouthguard at night
Although this step is not always required, if you clench or grind your teeth then wearing a soft mouthguard is essential to protect your composites from wearing down and chipping. If you keep fracturing them despite wearing a soft mouthguard the issue will most likely due to your bite and you may require further treatment to correct this.
4. Regular Brushing and Flossing
Like your own teeth it is very important that you maintain a high level of oral hygiene. Minor composite bonding can be easy to clean around however if you have had a more significant smile makeover with composite veneers this will require a high level of maintenance. Although composite is a great material it can attract more plaque than your own teeth especially if it has not been polished correctly.
